Some
of the best fly fishing in the state can be had in the rivers
and lakes of South Park, Colorado. South Park offers Gold
Medal fly fishing near Colorado Springs, less than hours drive.
South Park, a high mountain plains area in south central Colorado,
is characterized by numerous reservoirs and open meadow streams.
Antero, Elevenmile, and Spinney Mountain Reservoir are all great
reservoirs that can be fished from a float tube or the shore.
Many large rainbows, cutthroats, and brown trout have been caught
out of each reservoir with a variety of different patterns. Popular
fly patterns include scuds, wooly bugger, damsel fly, and callibaetis
flies. We also offer pike trips to Elevenmile and Spinney Mountain
Reservoirs. These trips are structured around hunting down and
fishing to the great northern pike. These fish are fun to stalk,
and put up a huge fight. Some fish in excess of 40 inches have
been landed in these two reservoirs. Two of the best river locations
to fish for trout in South Park are the "Dream Stream" and Tomahawk
State Wildlife Area. The "Dream Stream" is a tailwater that begins
below Spinney Mountain Reservoir and winds its way through open
grassland eventually finding its way into Elevenmile Reservoir.
Typical western tailwater patterns such as black beauties, miracle
nymphs, crystal midge emergers, san juan worms, scuds, and pheasant
tails are patterns that are very effective along this stretch
of river. The river also gets some large rainbow and brown trout
that swim up from Elevenmile Reservoir to spawn in the spring
and fall, respectively. Tomahawk State Wildlife Area, located
just north of the town of Hartsel, is a classic brown trout open
meadow fishery. Numerous fish can be caught using terrestrials
fished on the surface during the summer months. Extremely large
brown trout can be spotted during late August spawning along this
stretch of the Middle Fork of the South Platte. Join us for a
day in South Park where big fish and spectacular views are the
name of the game.
