South
Platte River-Cheeseman Canyon, Deckers, Trumbull area
The South Platte below Cheesman Reservoir offers
challenging western tailwater fly fishing at its finest. Beautiful scenery and big fish
are what most people think of when "The Platte" is mentioned. Designated "Gold Medal Water"
by the Colorado Division of Wildlife, Cheesman Canyon offers the opportunity to catch
huge rainbow and brown trout. Although a long hike into the canyon is required, the rewards
are worth it with beautiful canyon scenery and big fish lining the river bottom. Fishing
downstream from the canyon near the towns of Deckers and Trumbull can also be just as
rewarding without the long hike to the water. Brown and rainbow trout up to 10 pounds
are rare, but not out of the question. Riffles, pools, back eddies, and many other river
characteristics make up this section of the river. Weekend crowds can be a problem, but
booking a weekday trip is usually the solution. The South Platte fishes well year round
with the best dry fly action from April through October. Half day guided trips are available
at Deckers and Trumbull.
